Prison Slave Labour Capital of the World – USA

remuz [Jack The Ripper] / Foter

Despite all their protests against other nations use of slave labour (China) the United States of America is in fact the worlds largest user of prison slave labour. The US has more prisoners in the prison population than anywhere else in the world. Not only that, but that they also have the highest number of prisoners per capita out of every nation in the world.

To give you an idea of the per capita incarceration rate here are four countries on the list (source):

  • 1. USA 730 prisoners per 100,000
  • 90. UK 156 prisoners per 100,000
  • 121. China 122 prisoners per 100,000
  • 130. Canada 117 prisoners per 100,000

The USA not only has the largest prisoner population per capita, they also actively use their prison population as “slave” labour. The average hourly wage paid to a US prisoner who is working in prison industry is only $0.12 – $0.93 per hour (source).

The US prison system is an industry, taking in billions of dollars every year in revenue. It is in the best interest of the private prisons to keep the population high. The epitome of this corrupt system can be seen in the state of Louisiana:

Louisiana is the world’s prison capital. The state imprisons more of its people, per head, than any of its U.S. counterparts. First among Americans means first in the world. Louisiana’s incarceration rate is nearly triple Iran’s, seven times China’s and 10 times Germany’s.
